Cleo Yao is an artist working primarily with photography, moving image, and installation. She holds dual degrees in Photography and Art History from New York University and currently lives between Shanghai and Paris. Sustained movement across different cultural and geographic contexts has shaped a practice that begins from a position of perception that remains deliberately unresolved. Starting from everyday objects and familiar scenes, Yao reconfigures modes of looking to loosen established contexts, allowing images to unfold without predetermined meaning. Her work invites viewers to generate their own experiential readings through the act of looking. For Yao, the image is not a reproduction of reality but a continuously unfolding mode of perception.
